Core Mechanics You Need to Master for Cosmic Realm Doom the Dark Ages
Unlike other dark fantasy titles, Cosmic Realm Doom the Dark Ages doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to explaining its core systems, so many new players miss critical details that make the game far easier to play. The first system you need to learn is sanity decay, which ticks down any time you’re in unlit areas, fighting corrupted void enemies, or interacting with cursed objects. If your sanity hits zero, you’ll get a permanent 30% damage debuff that won’t go away until you rest at a blessed campfire, so you never want to let it drop below 25% if you can avoid it.
Next, learn how relic charging works before you hoard every rare relic you find. Uncharged relics do absolutely nothing, no matter how legendary their description sounds, and you need to feed them 50 to 200 soul shards from fallen enemies to activate their bonuses. Don’t waste shards on low-rarity relics early on; save them for the legendary ones you find in hidden dungeons, as their bonuses will carry you through the entire endgame.
Finally, pay attention to your alignment with every choice you make. Every time you help a villager, side with a cult, or steal from a merchant, you shift your alignment to Light, Corrupted, or Neutral. Your alignment determines what quests you can access, what gear you can equip, and what ending you’ll get at the end of the main story arc, so you don’t want to make choices randomly if you’re chasing a specific playstyle.
Beginner Mistakes That Will Wipe Your Save Before You Hit Level 10
Most new players jump into the game without reading the short tutorial popups, and that’s a fast way to end up replaying the first 5 hours of the game three times in a row. I made almost all of these mistakes on my first playthrough, so I know exactly how frustrating they are. These mistakes are so common because Cosmic Realm Doom the Dark Ages doesn’t explicitly warn you about the consequences of small choices early on. The most common missteps include:
- Ignoring the torch durability meter: You can craft extra torches for 2 wood and 1 cloth at any crafting station, and running out of light in a cave will trigger sanity decay so fast you’ll be debuffed before you can fast travel out.
- Selling all your common crafting materials: That stack of 50 iron ore you sold for 10 gold? You’ll need 60 of it to craft your first rare quality weapon at level 8, and farming it back takes twice as long as just holding onto it in the first place.
- Attacking neutral NPCs for extra loot: Even if they look like easy targets, attacking a neutral villager will mark you as hostile to every faction in that region, locking you out of 12+ side quests permanently.
It’s tempting to rush through the early zones to get to the more exciting boss fights, but taking 10 extra minutes to stock up on basic supplies will save you hours of frustration later on. You don’t need to grind for hours in the starting zone, but you should at least fill your inventory with 10 torches, 20 healing herbs, and a stack of spare arrows before you head into the first dark forest area. If you’re playing on hard mode, add an extra 10 healing items to that list, as the forest enemies hit 40% harder than the starting zone mobs.
How to Unlock the Hidden Ending of the Dark Ages Story Arc
90% of players only get the default neutral ending on their first playthrough, because the hidden Corrupted and Light endings require specific choices you have to make as early as level 3. You can’t unlock either hidden ending if you make even one conflicting choice during your playthrough, so it’s best to decide what ending you want before you start the game if you want to avoid replaying the whole story.
To unlock the Light ending, you have to refuse all rewards from corrupted NPCs, donate 1000 gold to the village church, and collect all 7 blessed relics scattered across the map before you fight the final boss. You’ll also have to spare the Corrupted King at the end of his boss fight, instead of killing him for extra loot. The Light ending unlocks an exclusive holy greatsword that does 2x damage to void enemies, which is perfect for New Game+ playthroughs.
For the Corrupted ending, you have to side with the void cult in every faction conflict, sacrifice 3 innocent NPCs at the void altar in the northern mountain region, and equip the full corrupted armor set before the final fight. You’ll also have to kill the village elder at the end of the first act, which locks you out of all Light-aligned quests for the rest of the game. You can’t switch alignments halfway through your playthrough, so if you pick a side early, stick with it to avoid missing out on the ending rewards.
Pro Tips for Beating the Hardest Boss Fights
The three hardest boss fights in the game are the Void Warden, the Corrupted King, and the Cosmic Serpent, and each has a specific weak point that most players never notice. You don’t need to grind for 10 extra levels to beat any of them; you just need to know when to attack and when to dodge.
The Void Warden, the first major boss, is weak to fire damage, so if you equip a fire-enchanted sword and stack fire resistance buffs, you can cut its health down in half in the first 30 seconds of the fight. Don’t bother attacking it when it’s holding its shield up, as it will block 100% of your damage and counterattack for 70% of your max health. Wait for it to swing its mace, dodge behind it, and hit its exposed back for critical damage.
The Corrupted King is only vulnerable when he stops to roar, so don’t waste your attacks on him when he’s swinging his axe, wait for that 2-second window to hit him with your strongest spells. He also has a one-hit kill attack where he slams his axe into the ground, so make sure you’re at least 10 feet away from him when you see him pull his axe over his head.
The Cosmic Serpent, the final boss, has a weak spot on the underside of its head, so you have to dodge its tail attacks to get underneath it to land critical hits. Don’t waste your healing items as soon as your health drops below 50%; wait until you’re at 20% or lower, because most of its attacks will knock you down by 30% health at a time, and you’ll run out of supplies before the fight ends if you heal too early.
Cosmic Realm Doom the Dark Ages can feel unforgiving when you first start playing, but once you get the hang of its core mechanics and learn to avoid common beginner mistakes, it’s one of the most rewarding dark fantasy games on the market right now. Take your time exploring every nook of the map, talk to every NPC you meet, and don’t be afraid to walk away from a boss fight for an hour or two if you’re getting frustrated. You’ll be unlocking hidden endings and beating the hardest difficulty settings before you know it.
