If you’ve spent the last three runs stuck halfway through Doom The Dark Ages’ 10th chapter, you’re not alone. I spent almost four hours grinding this level last week, missing hidden chests and wasting two BFG charges on the mid-boss before I stumbled on most of the doom the dark ages chapter 10 secrets no one I play with had ever mentioned. This level is designed to reward players who look past the obvious linear path, and even seasoned Doom veterans miss half the hidden perks on their first three clears. I’ve compiled every confirmed secret I found, plus tips from the game’s official Discord mod team to help you 100% the level without pulling your hair out.
Doom The Dark Ages Chapter 10 Secrets: Hidden Collectible Locations You Missed
Many of these doom the dark ages chapter 10 secrets are hidden in plain sight, so it's easy to walk right past them if you're focused on fighting off demons. The first secret is available almost immediately after you spawn into the level. After you clear the first wave of imps and hell soldiers, you’ll see a broken stone staircase leading up to the first objective marker. Instead of turning right to follow the marker, jump left onto the narrow ledge behind the crumbling stone pillar. You’ll find an uncommon rune that boosts your shotgun damage by 30% for the entire level, which makes every subsequent fight way easier.
Two more collectibles are hidden later in the level, right before major boss fights. After you activate the first runestone gate to progress the story, don’t step through immediately. Turn around and shoot the cracked stone wall to the left of the gate to open a small crawl space. Inside, you’ll find a full BFG charge and two super health kits that will save you during the mid-boss fight. The final collectible is the golden skull, which unlocks a exclusive shotgun skin for your entire save file. You can find the full list of quick collectible checkpoints below:
- Left ledge behind the broken staircase immediately after the first imp wave
- Cracked stone wall left of the first runestone gate you activate
- Color-changing torch on the wall right outside the mid-boss arena
All of these collectibles count towards your 100% level completion, and none of them are required to progress the story, so you can skip them if you’re just trying to beat the level fast. But if you’re going for full completion, you’ll need to grab all three before you enter the final boss arena, since you can’t go back once you trigger the fight.
Skipable Cutscenes and Shortcuts That Cut Playtime In Half
Most players don’t know that almost every long cutscene in chapter 10 can be skipped without missing any quest progress. The longest cutscene is the 3-minute sequence where the dark priest summons a horde of demons right after you grab the first runestone. To skip it, just shoot the glowing red orb above the altar twice as soon as you enter the room. It will trigger the demon fight immediately, and you won’t lose any story progress for your save file.
There’s also a massive shortcut right after you beat the mid-boss that skips almost 10 minutes of demon encounters. After you defeat the hell knight mid-boss, you’ll see a long, dark hallway lined with cacodemons and imps that leads to the final boss room. Instead of walking down the hallway, jump onto the rusted metal pipe on the right side of the mid-boss arena, climb up to the rafters, and drop directly into the final boss room through the broken ceiling tile. You won’t lose any quest progress by taking this shortcut, and you’ll skip 12+ demon encounters that waste ammo.
The only downside of this shortcut is you’ll miss the ammo drops in the hallway, so make sure you have at least 20 shotgun shells and one rocket before you take it. If you’re playing on ultra-nightmare mode, this shortcut is a total lifesaver, since you avoid the two hidden hell knights that spawn halfway down the hallway and one-shot most low-armor builds.
One-Shot Boss Tactics That Use Hidden Level Perks
The final boss of chapter 10, the Wraith King, has a hidden weak point that less than 15% of players have found, according to recent community play stats. If you picked up the 30% shotgun damage rune from the first secret, you can take him out in two shots, no matter what difficulty you’re playing on. All you have to do is position yourself behind the broken stone pillar on the left side of the final arena, wait for him to do his wide fire breath attack, then shoot the glowing blue spot on the back of his neck twice with the super shotgun. Two well-placed shots will take him out instantly, even on ultra-nightmare difficulty.
If you didn’t grab the damage rune, you can still take him out in one hit using the hidden explosive barrels in the arena. There are three unmarked explosive barrels hidden behind the stone pillars on the right side of the room. When the Wraith King walks close to the pillars to do his charge attack, shoot one of the barrels to trigger a massive explosion that takes off 70% of his health in one hit. Follow up with one rocket shot to the face, and he’ll go down immediately.
Just make sure you’re at least 10 feet away from the barrel when you shoot it, or the explosion will take you out too. I learned that the hard way on my second run, and lost a full ultra-nightmare save file because I stood too close. If you’re playing co-op, have one player distract the boss while the other lines up the barrel shot, it’s way easier than trying to do it alone.
Common Mistakes That Make You Miss Chapter 10's Best Secrets
The biggest mistake players make when playing chapter 10 is rushing through the level to get to the final boss fight. Most of the hidden secrets only spawn if you clear every demon wave in the first half of the level. If you skip the imp wave near the first staircase to run straight to the runestone, the ledge with the damage rune won’t even spawn, so you’ll miss out on the 30% damage boost for the rest of the level.
Another common mistake is ignoring the small glowing blue runes painted on the walls. These runes are markers that point directly to hidden secret areas, so if you see one, there’s a hidden room or collectible within 10 feet of it. A lot of players think they’re just decorative, but they’re intentionally placed to guide players to secrets if they’re paying attention.
You also don’t need to use any keys to open secret rooms, all you have to do is shoot or interact with the cracked wall or hidden switch. A lot of players waste bronze and silver keys they find earlier in the game on these secret doors, when they’re actually completely unnecessary. If you’re playing co-op, only the host can interact with hidden switches, so if you’re a guest player, make sure to tell the host when you spot a glowing rune so they can activate it for the whole team.
At the end of the day, most of the doom the dark ages chapter 10 secrets are designed to reward players who take their time and explore every corner of the map, instead of rushing through to the next objective. You don't have to be a pro player to find all of them, just keep an eye out for cracked walls, off-color torches, and glowing runes on the walls, and you'll 100% the level in no time. I’ve tested all of these tips on every difficulty level, and they work for both single player and co-op runs, so you can use them no matter how you prefer to play. If you find any other hidden secrets I didn't mention, drop them in the comments below to help other players out.
