Doom The Dark Ages Chapter 8 Secrets: Full Guide to Hidden Loot & Easter Eggs

Doom The Dark Ages Chapter 8 Secrets: Full Guide to Hidden Loot & Easter Eggs

If you’ve spent the last few runs grinding through Doom The Dark Ages’ brutal Gothic campaign, you know chapter 8 is where the difficulty spikes hard. The fog-shrouded citadel level is packed with tough armored enemies, tricky platforming sections, and almost no checkpoints, so it’s easy to get focused on just surviving long enough to beat the final boss. I missed almost half the hidden content on my first two playthroughs before I sat down to map every nook and cranny of the level for a co-op guide I was making for my friends. This post breaks down every doom the dark ages chapter 8 secret I’ve uncovered, from unmarked loot caches to a secret boss fight most players never even know exists. You won’t have to waste hours replaying the level over and over to grab every reward, I’ve already done all the legwork for you.

Doom The Dark Ages Chapter 8 Secrets: Unmarked Loot Caches You’re Missing

The first cache is located right after you pass through the opening citadel gate, when you’re ambushed by the first group of possessed knights. Most players clear the group and immediately head up the wide stone stairs to the next section, but if you turn left immediately after the last knight falls, you’ll see a collapsed stone arch half-hidden by ivy. Crouch through the small opening, and you’ll find a small chest tucked behind a pile of broken stone. The chest holds the unholy greatsword skin, which doesn’t just change the look of your melee weapon—it also adds a 10% damage boost against all undead enemy types, which will come in handy for the last two chapters of the campaign. I didn’t find this until my third playthrough, and it made a huge difference when I was fighting the hordes of skeletons in chapter 9.

The second cache is in the library section, right after you pull the iron lever to open the door to the main hall. Don’t walk through that door as soon as it opens. Instead, look to your right, where you’ll see a broken oak bookshelf that you can climb. Jump up to the top shelf, and you’ll find a small secret door hidden behind a stack of old scrolls. You’ll need the rusted iron key you picked up from the blacksmith’s shop in chapter 7 to open it, so if you sold that key to a vendor earlier, you’ll have to reload an earlier save or go back to grab it. Inside the room, you’ll find 3 permanent upgrade orbs—one for max health, one for max armor, and one for stamina. These orbs don’t expire, and they apply to all your save files, so they’re absolutely worth going out of your way to grab.

Hidden Easter Egg That Unlocks A Secret Boss Fight

The cathedral section of chapter 8 is mostly linear, so most players grab the holy relic off the altar and head straight for the exit to the courtyard. But if you take 30 seconds to interact with the four stone statues lined up against the back wall in the correct order, you’ll unlock a hidden passage that leads to one of the best secret boss fights in the entire game. The correct order is left to right: knight, priest, peasant, king. I figured this out by accident when I was messing around waiting for my friend to join my co-op run, and I was shocked when the altar slid to the side to reveal a stone staircase leading down.

The boss you’ll fight is the forsaken templar, a level 15 enemy that hits way harder than the chapter’s main boss, the corrupted baron. If you’re under level 12, don’t even attempt this fight—his charge attack will one-shot you even if you have full legendary armor, I learned that the hard way when I triggered it on a low-level speedrun and lost 2 hours of progress. If you do beat him, though, the rewards are well worth the effort:

  • Eternal flame shotgun mod that deals 15% extra fire damage over time, which stacks with other fire damage boosts you might have equipped
  • Exclusive "Templar Slayer" name plate for your multiplayer profile, which only 12% of players have unlocked according to the game’s official achievement stats
  • 20,000 in-game gold, enough to fully upgrade one of your primary weapons from level 1 to max level
  • I use the eternal flame mod on every single one of my playthroughs now, it makes clearing hordes of weak enemies so much faster.

How To Skip The 10-Minute Wave Defense Section

If you’ve played chapter 8 more than once, you know the courtyard wave defense section is the most frustrating part of the entire level. You have to stand in a small marked area and fight 7 waves of increasingly tough enemies, including two mini-bosses on the 6th and 7th waves. If you die at any point, you have to start the entire wave sequence over again, which can add 20 or 30 minutes to your playtime if you’re underleveled. But there’s a secret shortcut that lets you skip this entire section entirely, no questions asked.

When you first enter the courtyard, don’t run to the marked area to trigger the wave defense. Instead, head to the far left side of the courtyard, near the broken wooden cart piled with rotting hay. You’ll see a cracked section of the stone wall that looks slightly lighter than the rest of the wall. Fire a single rocket from your rocket launcher at the crack, and the wall will blow open to reveal a small tunnel that leads straight to the main boss arena. There’s no catch, you can just walk through and skip the entire wave sequence. But there is a downside to taking this shortcut: If you skip the wave defense, you miss out on the rare anti-armor crossbow that drops from the final wave’s mini-boss. This crossbow is the only weapon in the game that can one-shot armored knights with a headshot, so if you’re farming for powerful weapons, it’s better to tough out the wave defense. If you’re just trying to beat the chapter quickly for a speedrun, though, the shortcut is a total game-changer.

Hidden Collectible That Unlocks The Post-Credits Cutscene

Most players beat the chapter 8 main boss, the corrupted baron, and immediately run through the exit door that opens up as the citadel starts to collapse. I did this three times before I accidentally stumbled on the hidden collectible that unlocks the full post-credits cutscene for the chapter. After you defeat the corrupted baron, wait 10 seconds instead of running for the exit. Turn around, and you’ll see a small alcove behind the baron’s stone throne, hidden by a falling curtain of rock dust. Walk into the alcove, and you’ll find a torn royal journal sitting on a small stone table.

Grab it before you run through the exit, and when you finish the chapter, you’ll get a 2-minute post-credits cutscene that reveals the main villain’s backstory, and teases the location of the final boss in chapter 10. Most players never see this cutscene, since the game doesn’t give you any hint that the journal exists, and the collapsing citadel makes you feel like you have to rush for the exit immediately. I only found it when I was replaying the chapter to record clips for my TikTok account, and I was shocked by how much lore I was missing out on. If you care about the game’s story at all, this is one secret you don’t want to miss.

None of these secrets are marked on the in-game map, and the game never gives you any hints that they exist, so it's no surprise most players walk past them without ever noticing. Even if you've already beaten chapter 8 once, it's worth jumping back in for an hour to grab all the loot and unlock the extra content I covered here. The permanent upgrade orbs, exclusive weapon mod, and hidden cutscene add so much value to the rest of your playthrough, and they make the much harder later chapters feel way more manageable. Taking the time to track down every doom the dark ages chapter 8 secret will also give you bragging rights over your friend group, since most of them will probably never find all of these hidden spots on their own. If you find any other hidden spots I missed, drop them in the comments below, I'm always looking for new loot and easter eggs to test out on my next playthrough.
