I’ve sunk over 300 hours into Doom The Dark Ages across 7 full playthroughs, and I missed the key entirely my first two runs because I had no clue it even existed. I stumbled on it by accident during my third run, and it completely changed how I approach every playthrough now. If you’ve heard vague mentions of a rare, game-changing hidden item, you’re probably looking for the doom the dark ages key. It’s not obvious how to find it or what it does, so I put together this full guide to save you the hours of confusion I went through.
What Is the Doom the Dark Ages Key, and Why Does It Matter?
A lot of new players assume this is just another generic door key for a specific level, but that’s not the case at all. It’s a legendary, playthrough-specific collectible that unlocks content you can’t access any other way. It doesn’t spawn for every player either, so if you don’t know the spawn requirements, you could run 10 playthroughs and never see it once.
It doesn’t take up inventory space, so you don’t have to worry about ditching other gear to carry it. That said, it’s easy to miss if you’re rushing through levels to get to boss fights. I used to speedrun levels to farm boss drops, and that’s exactly why I missed it for so long. I didn’t stop to explore side areas or collect small runes, so the key never spawned for me.
You only get one per playthrough, so knowing how to use it correctly is just as important as knowing how to find it. Waste it on the wrong unlock, and you’ll have to wait until your next full playthrough to get another one.
Exact Locations to Find the Key Every Playthrough
First, you need to know the spawn requirement to even make the key appear. You have to collect all three small cathedral runes hidden in the first three levels before the key will spawn. The runes are easy to find if you’re exploring side areas, but they’re easy to miss if you’re rushing. Each rune glows faint blue, so keep an eye out for that glow in dark corners.
Once you have all three runes, the key will spawn in one of three fixed locations. I’ve confirmed these spawn points work across every difficulty level, so you don’t have to worry about them changing if you’re playing on Ultra Nightmare. The spawn location is random per playthrough, so check all three if you don’t find it at the first spot:
Once you pick up the key, you’ll get a small pop-up notification confirming you have it, but it won’t show up in your visible inventory. You can check if you have it by opening the collectibles tab in your menu, it’ll be listed under “Legendary Items”.
All Unlocks and Uses for the Key
You can use the key for one of three different unlocks, depending on what you want to get out of your playthrough. I usually pick a different unlock every run to keep things fresh, but some options are definitely better for new players than others.
The most popular unlock for new players is the Fallen Templar Blade, a melee weapon that deals 40% more damage than the standard chainsaw, and inflicts a permanent burn effect on all demon-type enemies. It uses no ammo, so it’s a great backup weapon for runs where you’re struggling to find enough shotgun shells. You unlock it by using the key on the golden chest in the Forsaken Cathedral’s basement.
If you’re looking for extra upgrades and a fun challenge, you can use the key to open the gate to the Lost Catacombs hidden level. This level has 10 permanent armor and health upgrade points, plus a unique demon skin for your shotgun that increases reload speed by 20%. The level is harder than the main story levels, so make sure you have at least level 2 armor before you go in. You’ll face three elite enemies at once halfway through, and they’ll wipe you fast if you’re undergeared.
The third option is to use the key to unlock the hidden post-credits ending. To do this, you just need to keep the key in your collectibles tab when you defeat the final boss. This ending reveals how the Doom Slayer first arrived in the Dark Ages timeline, and it’s required if you want to unlock the secret “Templar Slayer” skin for your next playthrough. I recommend saving this unlock for your second or third playthrough, once you’ve already tried the other two options.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using the Key
I made almost every possible mistake with this key my first few runs, so I know exactly what to warn you about. The biggest mistake new players make is wasting the key on a regular golden chest. Regular golden chests can be opened with standard gold keys you find all over the map, so using the legendary key on one is a total waste. You’ll know you’re using it for a valid unlock if you get a pop-up asking if you’re sure you want to use the legendary key before you interact with the object.
Another common mistake is trying to grab the key before you clear all nearby enemies. As soon as you pick up the key, a wave of four elite imps will spawn and attack you. If you haven’t cleared the rest of the area first, you’ll get swarmed by regular enemies and elites at the same time, and you’ll probably die. If you die before you can open your menu to confirm you have the key, you’ll have to re-spawn and go pick it up again, and the elite wave will spawn a second time.
Don’t forget to check your collectibles tab to confirm you have the key before you finish the final boss fight. I once left the key sitting in a random level because I picked it up, died right after, and forgot to go back and get it. I beat the final boss and realized I missed the hidden ending, and I had to run the entire playthrough again to get it. That’s a mistake I won’t make again.
You don’t have to go out of your way to get this key if you’re just running a quick casual playthrough, but it’s 100% worth the extra 10 minutes of exploration if you want to unlock all the game’s content. The weapons, upgrades, and story content you get from it make every playthrough feel way more rewarding. The doom the dark ages key is one of the most well-hidden and satisfying collectibles in the entire Doom franchise, and it’s easily my favorite part of playing Dark Ages runs now.
