Guide to Doom the Dark Ages Witch: Weaknesses, Loot and Fight Tips

If you’ve spent more than a few hours exploring the grim, monster-infested maps of Doom the Dark Ages, you’ve almost certainly heard whispers of the infamous doom the dark ages witch hidden boss. She doesn’t spawn in every run, and even when she does, most players stumble on her camp by accident while chasing a rare loot goblin or trying to escape a horde of raiders. I’ve fought her 17 times across normal, hard and nightmare difficulty runs, and lost more than half of those fights before I figured out the tricks to take her down without wasting all your healing potions. That’s why I put together this breakdown to take the guesswork out of the fight for you.

What Makes Doom the Dark Ages Witch Such a Tricky Opponent

If you’ve only fought regular mobs and basic bosses up to this point, the Doom the Dark Ages Witch will feel like a huge step up in difficulty. She doesn’t have a massive health bar like the game’s final knight boss, but her magic attacks ignore 70% of your physical armor, so that full set of plate you spent 3 hours grinding for won’t do you much good here. She also summons two skeleton minions every 15 seconds, and if you don’t take those out fast, they’ll swarm you while she fires off poison bolts from the back of the arena. I learned that the hard way on my first fight: I focused all my damage on her, and three waves of skeletons ended up stun-locking me before I could get off a single heavy attack.

Her biggest secret advantage is her 30% resistance to fire damage, which trips up a lot of players who rely on the popular fire greatsword build for most boss fights. You can still use fire weapons, but you’ll want to swap to a secondary weapon with magic or frost damage for 80% of your hits to get the fastest kill time. She also has a 10% chance to dodge heavy attacks, so spamming slow, high-damage hits will only make the fight drag on longer than it needs to.

Pre-Fight Prep You Don’t Want to Skip

You don’t need any endgame gear to beat her, but a little prep goes a long way to cut down on frustration. I always pack these three items before I go looking for the Doom the Dark Ages Witch’s camp:

  • 2 stacks of poison resistance potions: Her primary projectile attack inflicts poison that ticks for 10% of your max health every 2 seconds for 8 seconds, so these will stop you from dying mid-dodge. Common grade potions work just fine, you don’t need to waste rare upgraded versions for this fight.
  • A one-handed frost weapon with a fast attack speed: Frost damage slows her movement and minion spawn rate by 40%, which gives you way more room to avoid her attacks. A basic iron dagger enchanted with frost works better than a slow two-handed frost axe here, since you can get hits in and dodge back faster.
  • At least one thrown explosive or AoE spell: These let you clear waves of summoned skeletons in one hit instead of wasting time chasing them around the arena. Even a stack of regular fire bombs works perfectly for this step.
  • If you’re running a magic build, swap out the frost weapon for a spell that deals shock damage – it does 20% extra damage to her, and has a chance to stun her for 2 seconds every time you hit a critical strike. You don’t need to grind for rare versions of these items either; common grade versions work just as well for normal and hard difficulty runs. The only other prep step I recommend is clearing all the regular mobs around her camp before you trigger the fight. If you aggro her while there are still roving raiders nearby, you’ll end up fighting three different groups at once, and that’s a death sentence for even fully geared players.

    Step-by-Step Fight Walkthrough

Once you trigger the fight by approaching her cauldron, she’ll immediately fire off three poison bolts and summon her first set of skeletons. Don’t run straight at her right away. Instead, dodge the bolts to the left or right (her aim is slightly off to the right, so dodging left has a 20% higher success rate) and use your AoE attack to take out the first two skeletons immediately. Never let more than two minions stay alive at the same time – if you do, they’ll start using stun attacks that leave you open to her heavy magic blasts.

Once the first wave of minions is down, move in close to her and land 3-4 fast hits with your frost weapon before dodging back. She has a close-range slash attack with her ritual knife that does 50% of your max health in one hit, so you never want to stay within arm’s reach for more than 2 seconds at a time. When she raises her staff above her head to cast her big area attack, run to the edge of the arena and hide behind one of the stone pillars – those block 100% of the blast damage, and you don’t have to waste any potions to survive it.

I used to try to tank her big attacks with my shield until I realized the blast goes straight through most shields and still does half damage. Hiding behind the pillars is way more efficient, and it gives you a second to heal up if your health is low. When her health drops below 30%, she stops summoning minions and starts firing off twice as many poison bolts, so this is the point where you can stop worrying about minions and focus all your damage on her. You can usually finish her off in 10-15 fast hits at this stage, as long as you keep dodging her projectiles.

Exclusive Loot You Can Only Get From the Witch

Beating her is worth the hassle, because she drops some of the most useful unique items in the entire game. The most sought-after drop is her Ritual Staff of Regeneration, which gives you 2% health regen every second while you’re holding it, even in combat. That might not sound like a lot, but it cuts down on how many healing potions you need for endgame runs by almost 70%. I got one on my 10th fight, and I haven’t run a hard difficulty run without it since.

She also drops a rare Witch Cloak that gives you 50% poison resistance and 20% extra magic damage, which is perfect for magic builds. The only downside of the cloak is that it has very low physical defense, so you’ll want to swap it out if you’re fighting mostly physical damage enemies like raiders or knights. There’s also a 5% chance she drops a hidden map that leads to the secret ancient tomb dungeon, which is the only place you can get the game’s strongest legendary sword. I’ve only gotten that map once, but the loot from the tomb made the 12 runs I did to get it completely worth it.

If you’re playing on nightmare difficulty, she also drops a unique pet witch cat that follows you around and attacks enemies with small poison bolts. It’s not the strongest combat pet, but it’s a fun cosmetic that most players never get to unlock. Even if you don’t get the rare drops on your first few kills, she always drops enough gold and rare crafting materials to make the fight worth your time.

You don’t need perfect gear or hundreds of hours of playtime to beat the doom the dark ages witch, you just need to know her weaknesses and prepare accordingly. Don’t get discouraged if you lose your first few fights – even experienced players get tripped up by her minion spawns and poison attacks when they don’t know what to expect. Next time you spot her camp on your map, grab those poison resistance potions and your frost weapon, and you’ll walk away with some of the best loot in the game before you know it.
